JJ BACK ON THE UP

0
Jordaine Fletcher

Just months after being left disappointed, when he was booted by St. Ann-based Premier League Club, Mount Pleasant, one time buzzing sensation and crowd pleaser, Jordaine ‘JJ’ Fletcher, is seemingly plotting his way back into the big times and the spotlight.
The Western Mirror understands that the former Cornwall College da’Costa Cup prodigy is back doing what he loves, playing football and scoring goals. Currently playing in the United Premier Soccer League, with Miramar United Elite, a path he’s taking to get to the United Soccer League Championships (USL).

Fletcher, a hot shot striker and former Montego Bay United stand-out, who knows his way in and around the penalty area, is on the roaster of the Florida-based, Miramar team.

On Wednesday night, a chubby-looking JJ, playing in what he revealed was his seventh game, was among the scorers, producing a sensational trademark spectacular 35 yard strike, rocketing home left footed, dipping into the corner of the net, dipping between the base of the post and the outstretched left hand of the goalkeeper, after picking up the ball before adjusting his body, piling the opposing defender on his way to a stupendous strike, helping his team to a comfortable 3-0 win over Florida Soccer Soldiers.
Fletcher, according to statistics on the Club’s website, was scoring his 6th goal in seven games for his new outfit.

CONFIDENCE BACK
Meanwhile, a confident sounding Fletcher, speaking from his base in Florida, told the Western Mirror, ‘Am trying to get back on the right path and make amends for some of the mistakes made while plotting a future in football for myself”.

Fletcher also spoke about his misgivings in the past, buts adds he’s now more focused and determined to make amends. “The club is a great club also, not hundred percent professional as yet but it’s getting there. I felt so bad in myself after being axed by Mount Pleasant, so I just wanted to leave Jamaica. I came here to start all over again,” Fletcher said. “Am just working my ass off now to reach back to the top because I’ve made so many mistakes in my life growing up and I’m using them as a drive to push me forward because I learn so much from them, but no matter what I’ll never give up, I’ll never fail, I will always fight my way through to my goal that I want”.

He also revealed that he is being courted by a club in the United Soccer League Championships (USL) Sacramento Republic. They are based in California and occupy 4th spot in the championships with 7 points, five behind the leaders.
“They have been to a few of my games in recent weeks and have shown serious interest in my acquisition,” JJ told the Western Mirror.

Fletcher led Cornwall College to the 2016 da’Costa Cup title, netting over 30 goals, while also being named top marksman and copping the Most Valuable Player award.

JJ, a prolific striker, will be looking to join the likes of former Rusea’s starlet Deshane Beckford, ex Cornwall College and Catherine Hall teammate Peter-Lee Vassell as well as former UWI and Portmore and Cornwall College under-16 player, Venton Evans, in plying his trade in the United Soccer League Championships.

Phone for sex

A man from St. James was hauled before the St. James Parish Court on Wednesday, June 2, after he allegedly stole another man’s phone after the man refused to pay him for having a good time with him.

Winston Cooper, 46, appeared before Parish Judge Sasha Smith-Ashley to face charges of simple larceny and breaches of the Disaster Risk Management Act.

Court records revealed that on May 15, this year at around 9:40 p.m., the complainant was driving his car along Jimmy Cliff Boulevard when Cooper flagged him down.

The complainant complied and picked up the accused man, who had requested a ride home.

While the complainant was driving, Cooper allegedly asked him to touch his penis and the complainant complied.
They then drove to a location in Anchovy where they engaged in further sexual pleasure.

Cooper then demanded money from the complainant, who refused to give it to him. That did not sit well with Cooper, who took the complainant’s phone and exited the vehicle.

The complainant went to the Barnett Street Police Station and reported the incident to the police, who later accosted Cooper and retrieved the phone.

He was subsequently charged with simple larceny and breaching the curfew order.

The St. James Municipal Corporation says it is fully prepared for any eventualities that may arise in the current hurricane season which started yesterday, June 1, 2021.

Giving this assurance at a news briefing last week, Chairman of the Corporation, Mayor Leeroy Williams said, “Jamaica is prone to hurricanes; we are in the hurricane zone so it’s not a matter of if it will come, it’s when it will come so we have to make sure that we are prepared.”

The StJMC has a Disaster Preparedness Hazard and Mitigation and Safety Committee on which sits representatives of all relevant government and private sectors agencies and the mayor says “it is prepared and ready in the event there is a hurricane and there are disasters.” Heavy equipment, including machinery which would be necessary to clear land slippages and other disruptions, have been mobilized through the JDF and the NWA.

Close contact is being maintained with agencies such as the fire brigade, Red Cross, public health services, which are designated first responders in the event of a disaster and Mayor Williams reports that “they all say that they are in a state of readiness.”
All councilors have also been placed on alert and are to ensure that drains and gullies in their divisions are cleaned to avoid excess flooding. Funds will be made available to them. Citizens are also implored to pay attention to flood gauges installed at flood prone areas of the city and to evacuate should the water reach danger levels.

Of major concern are the North and South gullies which run through the city. They are to be maintained by the NWA, but with the agency recently advising that it does not have money for that purpose, the mayor is giving an assurance that the municipal corporation will step up and clean them.

Regarding drains, Mayor Williams said road maintenance was ongoing but admitted that “funding is really an issue so things are going a bit slow.”

There are 63 shelters spread out across the parish and shelter managers have their kits with water boots, raincoats, flashlights and personal protective equipment, inclusive of masks and sanitizers to adhere to COVID protocols.

Disaster Preparedness Parish Co-ordinator Tamoy Sinclair, said Shelter Managers have been instructed on how to address persons who may find themselves seeking refuge. Also, a team drawn from the municipal corporation, fire brigade, the public health department and Ministry of Labour and Social Security has inspected the shelters and a COVID isolation area designated at each facility.

Reflecting on the massive flooding of downtown Montego Bay by the North Gully in 2017, Deputy Mayor Richard Vernon said lessons were learnt by residents on how to deal with situation that would arise should there be a recurrence.

He said to reduce the volume of debris accumulated during a flood, “work is currently going on to concrete the Capital Heights section of the gully and with an upgrade, we are expecting less silt to flow to the lower end and contribute to the overflow of the gully.”

Jamaica welcomes new airline

It will make three weekly flights between the two cities on a year-round basis.

Jamaica’s airlift capacity has received a boost after US based Frontier Airlines began operating into the tourist city of Montego Bay.
The inaugural flight from Miami, Florida touched down on the tarmac at the Sangster International Airport on Friday, with over 160 passengers and crewmembers. For Odette Dyer, Regional Director at the Jamaica Tourist Board, this is a welcomed move as it bodes well for local tourism industry that is currently in recovery mode.

“The arrival of this Frontier flight today is really significant for us as a destination. The fact that Frontier could choose to open a new route into Montego Bay in the middle of a pandemic really is an amazing thing, that’s a bold step they have taken” she remarked as she joined the welcoming party at the airport on Saturday. She continued with “I want to laud the executives of Frontier for making this decision to come into the destination at a time like this, this auger very well for our destination”.

Frontier is now expected to service the island three times weekly with flights on Monday, Friday and Saturday and is expected to bring on average one hundred and sixty passengers. This is set to be part and parcel of a larger body of work done by the JTB in securing a number of seats. According to Mrs. Dyer “between May and August of 2021, we have secured approximately eight hundred and thirty-two thousand air seats into the destination.

Sales Manager for Frontier Airlines, Alfredo Gonzales, related that they were excited about this new venture. “As you know the Jamaican community is very large, not only in South Florida but around the country so this gives an opportunity for families and friends to get together and our fares are so low that anybody can afford to come and visit their friends and relatives on both directions” he remarked.

He further noted that in Frontier coming to Jamaica, they saw an opportunity to connect families and friends. “It was the right time and the right product and I think with what Jamaica has to offer, wide opened spaces, gorgeous beaches, beautiful resorts, amazing culture, the customer of today is looking for that”.

Mayor of Montego Bay, Leeroy Williams, was also on hand to welcome the flight and sought to impress on visitors the benefits of coming to the island. ““I can assure them that with this Jamaican experience, in future, they will always be willing to come to Jamaica” indicating that Jamaica and Montego Bay in particular has what they want and need.

The inaugural flight was dubbed a smooth one by Captain Tyler Peterson, who guided the plane down from the states. He noted that he was happy with flying to Jamaica, which was the first in his career of over thirteen years of flying.

The Albion Primary and Junior High School is winner of the 13th staging of the St. James Municipal Corporation’s (StJMC) Disaster Education Awareness Programme poster competition.

The programme is used as a vehicle to sensitize the general public and students in particular, thereby stimulating their interest in disaster mitigation and effective preparedness.

St. James Parish Disaster Preparedness Coordinator Tamoy Sinclair, said at a prize-giving function last Thursday that this year’s event was successful despite the impact of the coronavirus, COVID-19 pandemic which saw most students being separated from their formal schooling environment. There were 16 participants from six schools, one of which is in the neighbouring parish of Trelawny.

The theme for this year’s poster competition was “Managing Disasters When They Strike: Do Your Part, Be COVID-19 Smart”.
Miss Sinclair, highlighted the importance of ensuring that as many persons and organizations as possible, “are exposed to vital information that may make the difference between effective management of disasters and total anarchy which can result in disorganized attempts to mitigate any eventuality.”

Mayor Leeroy Williams, said it was hoped that the competition would impact the participating schools and their communities positively as they spread the knowledge garnered in producing posters dealing with management of the coronavirus.

Chief Executive Officer Gerald Lee, joined Mayor Williams, in commending participants and organizers of the competition.

The event which was chaired by Deputy Mayor Richard Vernon, saw first prize of $30,000 going to Shahiem Morris of Albion Primary and Junior High, second place of $20,000 to Jevaughn Jones of Flankers Primary and third place of $10,000 to Phidesha Gooden of Herbert Morrison Technical High School (HMTHS). Certificates of participation were presented to all other contestants. – CWP

Artiste mom Nubian Red seeks help to save son’s Leg

Rafael

Nubian Red is an up-and-coming artiste quietly building a name for herself internationally since 2016. Nubian Red has created a new sound called JamRock which is fusion music; a true original style and a music with depth and soul. To date, Nubian Red has released three singles; What You Say, Lost Thing and Freight Train which are available on all major streaming platforms.

As an independent artiste, she is taking on the challenge of establishing her music in an unpredictable and high-risk industry.

Nubian Red is also mother to her only child, and most precious gift, Rafael. He was born in 2015 with a unique challenge; the one in a million orthopedic condition called Tibial Hemimelia, TH (of the right) which has rendered him disabled. Rafael is a child prodigy, reading at 18 months, he plays the piano, and has an incredible talent for numbers.

As a result of the rarity, historically the treatment of TH has been amputation and was the only option offered to Rafael by the medical team in Jamaica. However, modern medicine has advanced treatment that corrects the condition for full or close to full functionality of the affected limb. The challenge is availability and cost as presently there are very few medical facilities that offer the corrective treatment.

The Paley Institute in Palm Beach Florida is one such facility. The founder of the Paley Institute, Dr. Dror Paley had examined Rafael in 2016 and gave a positive prognosis for treatment with three (3) major surgeries and physical therapy. The treatment is estimated at a total of US$250,000.

The surgeries would make Rafael the first Jamaican child born with the condition to receive the modern day treatment option instead of amputation. A GoFundMe Campaign has been set up that has raised US$19,000 which has been deposited at the Paley Institute. GoFundMe Account https://www.gofundme.com/f/savingrafaelslegcampaign

For May 2021, Child’s Month the family has organized a fundraiser called Radiothon (a telethon on Radio) with various internet and free to air radio stations in Jamaica, the United States, the United Kingdom, Netherlands and Ghana.

She was a surprise winner and one of the star performing stand-out athletes at the recent ISSA GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships in Kingston, but at the end of High School, there is no desire to continue with track and field, so says current star Leonie Angela Samuels.

Samuels, who now holds the Western and National Shot Put titles, told the Western Mirror in an interview, she has her eyes set on pursuing a career as a nurse, following the completion of High School. “I really have no desire to continue with track and field” she said.

One of three stand-out gold medal winners for the ever improving Rusea’s High School track and field team, Samuels is probably the most surprising top performer.

She divulged that Myles saw the potential in her and believed in her capabilities, thus she being where she is now.
Asked how COVID-19 has affected her over the past year and a quarter, Leonie said, “COVID-19 has had nothing but positive impacts on me…. . It has given me lots of opportunities as well as it helped me to become a better person. I will say COVID-19 had negative impact but, the good that it brought into my life outweighs the bad ones”.

Leonie surprised the field to take the Class 1 Shot Put event at the 2021 ISSA GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Track and Field championships, becoming the first Western-Jamaica based athlete to take a gold medal, with a throw of 13.21 metres, a personal best for her.

Quizzed as to her reaction after realizing her achievement, Leonie told the Western Mirror, “I was overwhelmed with joy when I found out I was the winner and also the fact that I PB. I did believe that I had the ability to throw 13 metre but I did not think I was going to win but my coach he believed in me from the start and he worked really hard, so I just had to do my best for him, my family and myself.”

The new Harmony Beach Park in Montego Bay opened to the public yesterday (Tuesday, May 25). The facility will be open from Mondays to Fridays, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; on Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 4p.m. and from 6 a.m. to 12 noon on Sundays.

The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) operators of the park, advises that guests to the free park, which is now the recreational focal point for the city of Montego Bay, will have use of the 600-metre jogging trail and lawn areas. The beach, children’s play areas and multi-purpose courts remain closed to the public at this time as the Corporation adheres to protocols of the Disaster Risk Management Act.

Harmony Beach Park was officially opened by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, on Friday May 21, 2021. In speaking on the importance of a Park such as Harmony, the Prime Minister emphasised that it represents the future of how urban development is done in Jamaica. “It embodies where we are going as a people in terms of urban planning and signals the commitment of the Government of Jamaica to introduce more green spaces in our communities. It is well documented that green spaces and other nature-based solutions offer alternate ways to increase the quality of urban environments. Green spaces promote healthy lifestyles, by improving both the health and wellness of residents. For this reason, I encourage you to see this Beach Park as a turning point for what you can expect from the public service and by extension, your Government as it relates to sustainability in development.

We recognize that development must be sustainable if it is to offer long-term benefits” said Holness.

There will be a maximum capacity of 500 persons allowed at the Park at any one time. This is to ensure that the proper physical distancing guidelines are safely managed.

The UDC invites members of the public to invest in Harmony Beach Park by way of the business opportunities that are currently available. The Corporation welcomes food and beverage operators, retail shopping and entertainment activities for these areas.

KPC produces range of products for consumers

JUDGING: Judges and special guests on the left, sample products manufactured by year 2 students pursuing Associate Degree in Agro-processing and Business Management at Knockalva Polytechnic College while students look on eagerly in anticipation of approval.

Less than two months of having an agro processing laboratory, the Knockalva Polytechnic College (KPC) in Hanover is preparing to make its presence felt in the consumer market with a range of products.

Students pursuing an Associate Degree in Agro-processing and Business Management on Friday, served notice that they intend to revolutionize Jamaica’s agro processing industry with a wide range of products for consumption.

Guided by tutor Murphy Gooden, they spent the last few weeks working on ideas, resulting in a display that was judged by an outside team last Friday. There were over 30 product lines covering wines, punches and juices, jams, sauces, spices and seasoning, breads and cake mixes with more than 90 percent locally produced ingredients.

Principal judge, Rev. Kevin Stewart commented that “All the products are good, they deserve credit. The seasoning is very good, very Jamaican and was tasty. The wines are very good; you could hardly distinguish between red wine and white wine that I’ve had before so they are up there with others.”

Rev Stewart also gave the jams high marks while noting that “one or two could be a little creamier but depending on the material used one could understand.” His comment on the baked products was that they “are excellent” as he singled out the breadfruit bread for high commendation. He believed that overall, the students did very well “and all the products are marketable. I think they can stand up against any other product on the commercial market and with a little more assistance I think they can do well.”

Principal, Pauleen Reid served notice that the KPC brand would definitely be available to shoppers in the not-too-distant future.

With an anticipation of support from the minister of agriculture, Mrs. Reid said with marketing, “we’re going to be hitting the shelves.”

Most of the raw materials were reaped off the farms on the 216-acre property that comprises the polytechnic college campus.

Commending the students for their achievements in staging the exhibition, Mrs. Reid spoke of “the passion they have been exhibiting because they took onto this idea and they have been so dedicated, zealous and committed to what they do and they’re consistent. When you go into the lab and see them, they are professional in their demeanour.”

She observed that the successful outcome in the creation of the products had given the students and entrepreneurial outlook which will be nurtured.”

Their tutor, Mr. Gooden disclosed that all products on display were born out of the students’ creativity and revealed that they have already created a business plan to take the products from the school to the market.

Skillibeng gets first Billboard Hot 100 song

Skillibeng and Nicki Minaj

Dancehall deejay Skillibeng earned himself a Billboard Hot 100 hit with his Nicki Minaj assisted “Crocodile Teeth (Remix)“. The song was released on May 13 as part of Nicki’s “Beam Me Up Scotty” mixtape, now out on all streaming services.

The song debuted at number 100 on Monday, May 24, making this Skillibeng’s first US Billboard entry. “Crocodile Teeth (Remix)” has since cracked 2.5 million streams on YouTube and the same for Spotify, while getting 1.3 million streams on Apple Music. The original single already has over 20 million views on YouTube.

Ironically, Skillibeng was mercilessly dragged on Twitter some weeks ago, following his announcement about the collab with Nicki Minaj. The “Mr. Universe” deejay posted and soon after deleted a cover art displaying the collaboration with his October 2020 track, which had been hot in the streets for months before. This led fans to believe the artiste was lying and seeking clout, using Nicki Minaj’s name.

After the big drop on Nicki’s mixtape, the artiste was again trending as social media users who previously accused him were put to shame.

Skillibeng has perhaps been enjoying the significant boost and bolstered International reach since the song’s release. The remix trended at number 1 on YouTube for three consecutive days after its release.

The gun-play track is currently the deejay’s biggest hit since getting his break in 2019 with “Brik Pan Brick.”

The artiste has been on the rise since, with a wide fan base, even wider now given the latest developments. Fans had projected that the “Coke” deejay would undoubtedly be making strides in the industry locally and internationally, and as such, he should take his music seriously.

As the news broke the internet on Monday, May 24, social media users were quick to commend the artiste, with hopes that he will use the opportunities from this new development wisely.

“Skilli get a big buss internationally, a just him fi know how him ago capitalize affa dis,” one person commented. Another added, “Skillibeng is the next dancehall superstar. I feel he has the potential to be bigger than any other artist right now.”

The remix with Nicki Minaj came just a few weeks after Skillibeng made links with international rappers Rich The Kid and Jay Critch and collaborated on “Real Boss.”
