Competent officiating enhances a game as a spectacle and adds to the enjoyment and pleasure the players get from the game. It can also contribute to their safety. Conversely, incompetence can distract from the game and cause frustration and conflict and put the safety of the players at risk. The laws/rules bestow upon the referee/umpire the responsibility to manage the match both on and off the field, on behalf of the governing body. This is indeed a significant responsibility and places that official in the position of being the most important and influential person at the match....
