After years of consistent lobbying and dialogue by the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry, for an office of the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) to be established in Montego Bay, On Wednesday, November 7, 2012 their efforts bore fruits with a branch being opened to the public in the ATL Shopping Complex in Bogue, Montego Bay.

Speaking with the Western Mirror President of the MBCC&I Davon Crump in welcoming the move said, “We (Chamber) are extremely happy at this time knowing that finally our many years of lobbying the Government and relevant authority it has become a reality. Both the licensed firearm holders, and applicants from as far as Negril and other parts of the island have to be travelling to Kingston to do renewal or apply, which is time consuming and also poses a safety risk as well, so we in western Jamaica wholeheartedly welcome this move by the powers that be, its quite timely especially in these trying times,” Crump noted.

Crump also disclosed that, with the opening of the office and owing to the many calls and request for gun licenses, he is expecting that there will be an increase in the amount of requests.

“I am hoping that the significant back-log of applications now waiting to be processed will be cleared up in the shortest possible time,” he stressed.

Of note, quite recently while visiting Montego Bay Minister of National Security, Peter Bunting met with the Chamber and the issue of the FLA was foremost on the agenda.
