When the clock strikes nine this evening, newly- promoted Montego Bay United will go up against Portmore United as action gets underway in the Red Stripe National Premier League end-of-round final. The game will be played at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
MoBay United defeated Arnett Gardens 1-0 to reach the final while Portmore clipped out of sorts Village United 2-1. “This is a very significant achievement for not only the team, but western Jamaica and it shows that football in the western part of the island is now seeing a revival,” said an elated assistant coach, Dr. Dean Weatherly.
The win over Arnett Gardens took MoBay United to 21 points in the second round, behind Portmore on 23 points. With MoBay United’s current turn of form, this as they were in the relegation zone all of the first round only to go unbeaten for the entire second round, must be something that is playing on the minds of Portmore United.
With the arrival of coach Neider Dos Santos, Montego Bay United has been unbeaten in 12 straight games and has risen to seventh position and has not looked back since. Since the team’s unbeaten streak started, the fans, who were disgruntled after the Seba United name change fiasco, have now seemingly started to return in droves.
On Wednesday, they turned out in their numbers to cheer on the team and they obviously were not let down. For MBU to come away victors of the End of Round Final this afternoon, they will have to be at their best against a Portmore team that knows how to win.
However, players such as skipper Keniel Moodie, Dwayne Ambursely, Jermaine Woozencraft, Oliver Trail and the in form Allan Ottey, will be leading the MoBay United charge. With the form that Ottey is in the Portmore defence will have to be at their best to stop him. However, Fabian McCarthy and company will have to hold steadfast in the defence line for MBU if they are to stop Portmore’s strident attacks that will be led by Roen Nelson and Eric Vernon.
“As long as we do what we are suppose to do the team will come away victorious. Rest assured we will be going all out for victory, I am just asking the fans to come out and give us their support,” Dr. Weatherly said.
Possible starting team For Montego Bay United — Jacomena Barrett, Dwayne Ambursely, Keniel Moodie, Kemar James, Allan Ottey, Omar Gordon, Adrian Robinson, Fabian McCarthy, Rohan Bernard, Oliver Trail, Jermaine Woozencroft.
