Last season’s runner-up Muschette High continue their reign in the U-16 leg of the ISSA/KFC Western High School Boys Basketball Competition, turning back Hebert Morrison 52-48 on Wednesday for their eight straight win.
Muschette now sits at the pinnacle of the leg with a maximum of 16 points and has secured their spot in the semi-final round.
Muschette’s Coach Romaine Smith said his team remains committed to being crown this season’s champions and will not falter in realizing the dream. Muschette lost to Holland in last season’s final.
“We just have to remain on the path and just work hard and apply ourselves because we expect no less than to win out this competition,” told Smith. “The team is very focused, determined and hungry for success so we just have to take things step by step,” he reiterated.
Smith explained that though Muschette defeated Herbert Morrison, he expects to face them in the final as they are a good team and should not be underestimated.
In the game, Muschette best Herbert Morrison 14-8 in the first quarter follow-through with a narrow 12-10 win of the second quarter, to affirm a 26-18 lead over their opponents.
The tides turned on Muschette in the new half, as Herbert Morrison came back with a fighting vengeance to snatch the third quarter 14-10. Muschette tried to regain their glory in the last quarter, but fell a point behind Herbert Morrison that edged a 17-16 win of the quarter.
This, however, provided no solace for Herbert Morrison as Muschette still managed to came out ahead.
Muschette’s Karlington Barrett made 23 points and eight rebounds with teammates’ Stephan Green and Michael Schloss finishing on 11 and 10 points respectively. The losers’ Ralique Grant scored 17 points, while Daniel Henry trailed on 11 points and five rebounds.
In a later a U-19 match on the day, William Knibb was beaten on their home ground after suffering a 43-40 defeat to Holland.
Holland’s top scorer was Kenrick Lindo on 14 points and 30 rebounds and Clifton Shettleworth on 16 points. Shavaughn Reid was Knibb’s top scorer, finishing on 22 points.
Holland lost the first quarter 11-5 to Knibb, but recoiled in the second quarter to win 13-10. The third quarter yielded a 14-10 win for Holland, who also took the last quarter 11-9 to prevail.
An U16 game between teams Frome and Spot Valley on Tuesday, January 17, saw the latter crushing Frome 98-11.
