WHITHER WIKILEAKS?
Revelations by the island’s two major national daily newspapers, the Gleaner and the Observer, of information gleaned from the now infamous WikiLeaks website, have put both the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the opposition People’s National Party (PNP) on the ropes.
A descent into depravity
Is it the worsening economic situation in the country that has led to the level of depravity to which some persons are prepared to make a living? Or is it just plain greed emboldened by desperation? In recent times, there are three particular acts of thievery that continue to vex all well-thinking citizens. These are crimes related to the targeting of educational institutions, the scrap metal trade and the cash for gold racket....The politics of change
For too long, Jamaicans have allowed themselves to be taken down the garden path by some politicians whose only intention is to feather their own nest, that of their relatives and cronies. Now that voters will be going to the polls between now and next year, it is vital that citizens take a closer look at what the political parties are offering in terms of policies, promises and choice of candidates....IS CASINO GAMBLING A DEAD ISSUE?
As part of its electioneering promises leading up to the 2007 General Elections, Prime Minister and Leader of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party indicated that the Casino Gaming Bill which his administration was hell-bent on passing into law would be at the centre of a major tourism development project by the government....OF CRICKET AND CARICOM
The West Indies cricket team, for a long time now (perhaps too long!) has been playing catch-up in a game that it once dominated internationally. Interestingly, the decline in Windies cricket has coincided with a similar scenario occurring in CARICOM. Does this mean that regionalism is dying and that both in the sporting and political arenas the island states and its mainland partners have failed to unite in the best interest of the people?...STRENGTHENING CARICOM
Wednesday’s whirlwind visit to Montego Bay by United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was not much ado about nothing. It was a major attempt by the Barack Obama led administration to intensify its assistance to the Caribbean region, thus Mrs. Clinton in her confab with the foreign ministers of the CARICOM region presented a number of goodies which could have far-reaching effects on a country like Jamaica in terms of social and economic advancement....The long, hot summer
The heat is on! Wow, is it hot! Ironically, this is happening even after many showers of rain which many thought would have cooled down Mother Earth. Is this a sign of things to come? Already, there are ominous indications that this year’s Hurricane Season may be a very busy one which could spell not only physical but economic disaster for Jamaica which is struggling to reach a plane of positive growth....Justice, truth be ours never?
The Jamaican National Anthem in part states “Justice, truth be ours forever, Jamaica land we love...†But does the average Jamaican ever get justice and hasn’t truth become a major casualty in the scheme of things?...BRINGING BACK CIVIC PRIDE
Over the years, Montego Bay has lost much of its beauty and civic pride. Once known as the friendly city, the highly touted tourism capital of Jamaica enjoyed much recognition internationally and was even known as the playground of the world’s jet set. Today, downtown Montego Bay is fast becoming a slum as urban blight sets in....Saving our youth
The findings of an Inter-American Development Bank/Government of Jamaica National Youth Survey 2010 have revealed that 55 per cent of Jamaica’s citizens are younger than 30 years old. Based on generational projections, it is this segment of the population that will determine in a real way the long term development of this country....- JAH PLEJAH - The man who created the name ‘Seba’
