Yet another historic milestone

The Mirror was born out of the ashes of the Beacon newspaper which folded in 1980. A group of workers including the current shareholders/directors took the decision then that Montego Bay in particular and Western Jamaica in general ought to have its own independent voice in the media landscape. With a great deal of will and dedication but very little capital, the undaunted quintet of Dennis Barton, Evelyn Robinson, Michael Bryan, Miriam Williams and Lloyd B. Smith formed Western Publishers Limited, a limited liability company that was registered on August 1, 1980. And on October 4, 1980, the first edition of the community newspaper hit the streets of Western Jamaica.

Blown out of Westgate Plaza by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, the newspaper was relocated to 82 Barnett Street where it remained until 2004 when the company began occupying its 4 Cottage Road offices and plant now equipped with a state of the art printing press, the only one of its kind outside of Kingston and the Corporate Area.

Over the years, the Mirror has been the recipient of numerous awards and citations including being named the Best Community Newspaper on several occasions by the Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ). Despite many up and downs, the newspaper remains the most widely read print medium in Western Jamaica, now published every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Today as we celebrate yet another historic milestone, we are happy to inform the public of the launching of our official website And in the coming months, we intend to give the newspaper a new look as well as improving the contents so as to satisfy the requests of our readers. Come celebrate with us as we continue to reflect the people’s news and views.
